Bleeding Control and Tourniquet Use for BC Workplaces

Most BC workplace bleeds are controlled by firm direct pressure. A small number need something more aggressive, which is where tourniquets and wound packing come in.

The escalation ladder

  1. Direct pressure
  2. Pressure dressing
  3. Wound packing for deep lacerations
  4. Tourniquet for uncontrolled extremity bleeding

Tourniquet placement

2 to 3 inches above the wound, never on a joint. Tighten until bleeding stops and the distal pulse disappears. Mark the time. Do not remove once applied. Related reading: shock recognition.
