Chest Pain and Cardiac Emergencies: The IFA Response

Chest pain can be anything from indigestion to a heart attack. In the workplace, treat it as cardiac until proven otherwise.

Signs of a cardiac event

  • Chest pressure, squeezing or tightness
  • Pain radiating to jaw, arm, back
  • Shortness of breath
  • Nausea, sweating

Response

  1. Sit the patient in a position of comfort
  2. Reassure, minimise exertion
  3. Oxygen if available and trained
  4. Be ready for CPR and AED if the patient deteriorates
  5. Call EMS early
