Safely Moving and Lifting Patients: OFA Level 2 Body Mechanics

Moving a patient badly is a great way to injure both of you. The Level 2 course teaches safe lifts and transfers used throughout BC workplaces.

Techniques

  • Two-person lift with coordinated count
  • Three-person log roll for suspected spinal injury
  • Stretcher transfer
  • Stair chair for multi-story buildings
  • Emergency drags (shoulder, ankle, blanket) when the scene is unsafe

Body mechanics

Bend at the knees, keep the load close, lift with the legs, no twisting. See spinal management.
